The Beast with Seven Heads and Ten Horns
Engraving, ca. 1555, 300 x 218 mm., Bartsch 26, Eisler 52 ii/ii, from Apocalypse. Fine impression on laid paper with no discernable watermark, trimmed on or just inside the arched platemark but virtually complete (Bartsch's measurements are 297 x 216 mm.; this impression measures 300 x 218; the London impression in The Illustrated Bartsch extends perhaps 1 mm. more to the sides); a tiny restoration at the lower left corner and one pin hole. The biblical reference is to Revelation II.13; Duvet's print gives it incorrectly as 14. The scene is phantasmagoric, crowded with the beast, worshippers, saints, angels and the Lamb of God.
