River Landscape
Black chalk, with pen and brown ink, 159 x 203 mm. Provenance: Dr. M.K.H. Rech (Lugt 2745b). Rapid, fluent sketch in black chalk, with equally rapid additions in pen and brown ink clearly defining a river scene with trees, a crenelated tower, figures on shore and in boats, on laid paper with a small fraction of a watermark and inked framing lines around the sheet. Verso, a pale, black chalk extensive mountainous landscape with trees, figures and a building. Apparently signed, verso, in brown ink with the phrase "d'apres leur painture (sic)" (?) Rech, from whose collection the sheet came, was known for preferring working sketches to finished drawings.
