La Madeleine aux Pieds de Jesus
Etching, and engraving, 1738, 250 x 610 mm., Robert-Dumesnil 3 iv/v. Fine impression on fairly thick laid paper with large margins; vertical and horizontal centerfolds reinforced, and some idiot has inked over the date to read 1538. Subleyras worked in southern France and in Italy. This is his most important print, done after his own painting, a festive banqueting scene at the home of Simon the Pharisee, with the Magdalene, at the right, drying Christ's feet with her hair. Judas Iscariot stands behind Christ, protesting. Impressions before the final state are uncommon.
