Designs for Relief Pilasters with Playing Putti and Women Feeding and Spanking Infants
Brown ink and wash, ca. 1575, 220 x 90 mm., P. Führing: Design into Art, No. 112 (as German). Provenance: Giuseppe Vallardi (Lugt 1223); Bernhard Houthakker (not in L.). A fine, finished study for two pilasters in brown ink and wash on laid paper, the outlines incised for transfer; the verso bears Vallardi's red chalk number F. 289. While in the Houthakker collection, it was catalogued as German School, late 16th century, by Peter Führing. The Houthakker collection was sold in January, 1994 at Christie's New York (this drawing, lot 1). Present opinion seems to be that it is North Italian, late 16th century.
