Manoah's Sacrifice (Judges 13:20)
Brown ink, 1650s, 140 x 112 mm.. Fluent pen and brown ink compositional sketch on laid paper, showing two kneeling figures by a smoking altar and an angel hovering in the sky. There is a pentimento in the angel's left foot. The drawing style is close to Koninck's work in the late 1650s, although the sheet is compositionally unrelated to another drawing of the same subject which Sumowski dates to ca. 1655-58. Since there is no extant painting of the subject by Koninck, the two studies may be independent works or alternative compositions for a projected picture. Manoah's wife (unnamed in the Bible), barren for most of her life, was told by the angel that she would give birth to a son - whom she named Samson. Manoah, at the instruction of the angel, offered a kid in sacrifice to Jehovah.
