Christ and the Madonna Appearing to Saint Dominic Writing the Rules of the Dominican Order

Brown ink, with grey wash and yellow-white heightening, 1605-12, 304 x 308 mm. Provenance: Padre Resta (Lugt 2292) (?); Baron Horace de Landau (L.1334c) without mark. A fine study in pen and brown ink over black chalk with grey wash and white heightening on brown prepared paper. The attribution and dating were given by Dr. Babette Bohn, who compared the drawing to one in the Louvre (inv. 7707) and related the composition to the painting of St. Francis in the Prado. The pen and brown ink attribution and discussion on the verso is in a writing very close to that of Padre Resta and may well be his. The drawing was in a group belonging to Baron Landau, acquired by Lord Tor Engestrom and sold by his descendent; it therefore has the Landau provenance although the mark is lacking.
