God the Father Supported by Angels; verso Four Scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses
Pen and black ink and grey wash (recto); brown ink (verso), 146 x 190 mm.. A fine and compositionally complex sketch with multitudinous figures sketched or implied, the upper corners arched in pen. God shows a triangular halo, symbolizing the Trinity, over his head. The precise scene depicted is elusive, but it could possibly involve the raising of Adam and Eve to the heavens. Verso, divided into rectangular boxes with illustrations of episodes from Metamorphoses numbered 13, 14, 17 and 18. The whole was probably cut from a much larger sheet.
