La Rochelle, Vue de la Pointe des Minimes

Etching, 1920, 148 x 225 mm., Delteil 130 iii/iii, edition 60. Fine impression in brown-black ink on laid paper with full margins, signed and numbered in pencil from the edition of 60. Robert Goetscher, from whose admirable catalog The Stamp of Whistler much of the information in this exhibit has been cribbed, says of Leheutre: "He is the most obvious and consistent of Whistler's French followers." Like many others, Leheutre saw an exhibition of Whistler's Venetian etchings and decided to do something like them. Like far fewer others, he developed a personal style which, while in many ways based on Whistler, was recognizeably his own. But no one should have any trouble seeing Whistler's Little Venice behind this view of La Rochelle.
