Winslow, Boat-Building Yards

Boat-Building Yards, Essex, England

Etching, and drypoint, 1907, 202 x 126 mm., Provenance: SvS unknown collector (Lugt 2368b). A fine impression in brown-black with varied plate tone on laid japan paper with full margins, signed in pencil. Winslow, who was born in Boston, studied at Whistler's Académie in Paris some time between 1898 and 1901, although how much true contact he had with Whistler is unknown. Later he lived in Paris, London and New York and was a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers. The debt of this print to Whistler is obvious (not least in the subject matter), but Winslow was too much of a conventional realist to have adopted Whistler's daring and experimental drawing and etching style. Winslow's prints are rarely seen these days.
