Little Bridge in Amsterdam

Etching and drypoint, date and edition unknown, 275 x 200 mm. Fine, atmospheric impression on old laid paper with full, large margins, the plate printed within a larger platemark from a blank plate; some ink stains and dust in the margins. Menpes, who was born in Australia, began etching long before he met Whistler in 1880. At that time he volunteered to help Whistler with the printing of the First Venice Set, which he and Walter Sickert took over, and he remained on close terms with the master until 1887. After the inevitable break he rarely mentioned Whistler's name, but after the latter's death he wrote an admiring volume of reminiscenses, Whistler as I Knew Him. No one has yet catalogued Menpes large output and he generally did not date his prints in the plate. There are works that could very nearly pass for Whistler himself and others of far different aesthetic purpose, but Menpes, like Sickert, was an authentic artist and his prints are well worth study.
