The Silk Dress

Drypoint, 1919, 352 x 201 mm., Hardie 188, edition of 56. A fine impression on old laid paper, trimmed along the platemark and signed in ink on the tab; a printer's crease and two repaired tears at the upper left corner (because of which the price has been reduced to its current level). The image is a portrait of Mrs. William Murray. The print, though the pose and dress are quite different, recalls Whistler's drypoint of Maude, Standing of 1873. McBey may have thought so too, to trim and sign the print in Whistler's manner.
