La Passerelle du Quai Maubec, La Rochelle

Etching and drypoint, 1924, 228 x 321 mm., not in Delteil; BN Inv. 148; Lecomte 149, edition of 75. Fine impression with burr on laid paper with full margins, signed and nunbered in pencil (pale but visible). In 1921, and in company with such as Corot, Pissarro, Daubigny and Goya, Leheutre had dedicated to him a full volume of Loys Delteil's Le Peintre-Graveur Illustré, a considerable tribute to a man whose career was still in mid-stream. Today, Leheutre is among the most forgotten of etchers. Though this picture of La Rochelle, on the west coast of France, owes a debt to such Whistlers as The Riva, it really needs no excuse for its own considerable appeal.
