The Bridge, Venice

Etching, 1879-80, 296 x 200 mm., Kennedy 204 viii/viii, from The 26 Etchings (2nd Venice Set). Provenance: Mortimer Menpes, Knoedler, Watson Dickerman (not in Lugt). A fine, clear and detailed impression in brown with an even plate tone on old laid paper with full margins, a proof apart from the edition of thirty. The impression was printed by Menpes, who began printing for Whistler in 1881, and who apparently reserved it for himself and hid it before Whistler could trim off the margins. Hence, the full sheet and the lack of a pencil signature. The scene is by the island of Ghetto in Venice.
