Battle of the Gladiators on Foot
Engraving, 39 x 123 mm., Bartsch 21, ex collections: K.F.F. von Nagler (Lugt 2529), Berlin Kupferstichkabinett (L. 1606), Kasimir Hagen (not in L.). A good, clear impression of this rare print, though clearly not in a class with the one reproduced in The Illustrated Bartsch, on laid paper with some uneven discoloration and with thread margins or trimmed on the platemark. The thematic source, of course, is Pollaiuolo's famous engraving the Battle of the Naked Men, though not a single figure here is directly derived from it. The question of the true identity of the Master I. B. has not been resolved. Bartsch equated him with Georg Pencz (i.e. Iorg Bencz), but a comparison of the two oeuvres shows more clear differences of artistic personality than similarities. More likely the two were contemporaries, working in Nuremberg in the shadow of Dürer and in the company of Barthel and Hans Sebald Beham.
