Infortunium (Misfortune)

Engraving, ca. 1541, 76 x 49 mm. Bartsch 141, Pauli 144 ii/iv. Very fine and sharp impression, before additional tussocks of grass were added to the rock in the left distance, on laid paper trimmed on or just inside the platemark. Some edges of the sheet have been touched with grey wash as if to simulate a platemark and a thread margin. Though Fortuna is often represented in art, her negative counterpart is not. She is also winged, but her eyes are open rather than closed or blindfolded and she is accompanied here by a small demon and a crab-like creature, chosen because it is said to move backwards or sideways. The print has always been admired for the elegance of its engraved technique particularly in the rendering of textures.
