Christ Shown to the People
Woodcut, ca. 1513, 71 x 48 mm. Bartsch (woodcuts) 25, Hollstein 25, Winzinger 50, from The Fall and Redemption of Man. A fine, clear impression on laid paper, trimmed on the borderline, which is visible all around. Woodcut on a tiny scale presents quite a different technical problem than engraving, and the greatest masters of the miniature woodcut were Altdorfer and Hans Lützelburger, who cut the blocks for many of Hans Holbein's designs.
