Hercules Killing Cacus
Engraving, 1545, 71 x 49 mm., Bartsch 104, Pauli 102 iv/iv, from The Labors of Hercules. Fine impression of the final state on laid paper trimmed on or just inside the platemark but always outside the borderline; a small reddish-brown stain at the lower left. Cacus was a fire-breathing giant, the son of Vulcan, who stole some of the cattle of Geryon after Hercules had collected them and driven them across the Tiber. Hercules recovered them and killed the giant, who is reduced here to normal size for artistic purposes but still breathes fire. The slaying of Cacus is not by itself one of the twelve classical labors, but the capture of the cattle of Geryon is and Cacus is a later part of the story.
