Neptune on a Sea Serpent

Engraving, ca. 1520-25, 26 x 45 mm., Bartsch 30, Hollstein 36, Winzinger 162. Fine impression on laid paper, trimmed on the platemark. The print is rare. Winzinger lists nine impressions in museums and estimates another six in private collections. The design may possibly be after an Italian drawing or a niello. Altdorfer was of an earlier generation than the other Little Masters, worked in Regensburg, was perhaps the least influenced by Dürer, and pioneered the making of miniature prints in Germany. He was often influenced, as here, by Italian nielli (small, decorative silver pieces whose incised lines were filled with sulphur to turn them black). His work had a telling impact on the later Nuremberg Little Masters.
