St. Matthew, from The Evangelists
Engraving, 1541, 43 X 29 mm., Bartsch 55, Pauli 57 iii/v, ex collections Georg Hamminger (Lugt 1159) and another, possibly Anonymous (L. 2756c). Fine impression on laid paper, the paper lightly discolored, with thread margins. The book is an expected attribute of all four evangelists, but Matthew's other attribute is a winged man or boy, here represented as a small winged putto clinging to the saint's robe and holding what is presumably an inkwell for the evangelist's pen.
