Tobias and the Angel

Etching, Nagler 3, Passavant 5, Hollstein 16 ii/ii, 163 x 105 mm., ex collection: Thomas Graf (Lugt 1092a). The story of Tobias (Old Testament Apocrypha) was of frequent inspiration to Elsheimer whose work, in turn, inspired Hendrik Goudt to two magnificent engravings (for one of them, see our web exhibition “40 Years 40”). It is thought, though, that Elsheimer himself produced an etching of the subject, a smaller and more intimate piece than either of Goudt’s engravings. A very fine, dark impression with a wide range of tone, on laid paper with visible watermark, thread margins outside the blank plate margin. The second state is with the etched signature. The image is a night scene and shows the Angel and Tobias carrying the fish, walking through a forest.
