Extensive Landscape with a Church Spire
Original drawing in black chalk, ca. 1650, 108 x 173 mm. Dubois, in spite of his French-sounding name, was Dutch and worked in Haarlem. This is a typical and finished, if minimalist, landscape drawing in black chalk on laid paper with a barely visible and indecipherable watermark; a few very pale stains in the sky. Dubois' drawings are sometimes confused with those of Ruischer, and Frank Robinson believes this drawing possibly to be by Ruischer, 1650 or after. In 1652 Dubois, together with Bega, Helmbreker and Van de Vinne, made a long trip to Germany. The subject of this drawing, however, is clearly the flatlands of Holland.
