Man and Woman Talking
Etching, ca. 1650, Bartsch 37, Godefroy 37 iii/v, Hollstein 37 iii/v, 107 x 84 mm. Ostade’s work -- paintings, drawings and etchings -- offers a panorama of low life in Holland in the seventeenth century, and his etchings are probably second only to Rembrandt’s in his depiction of such subjects. A fine, well-printed impression before the borderline was strengthened, almost certainly from the Picart edition of 1710, on laid paper with narrow margins outside the platemark. While one would generally prefer lifetime impressions, the Picart edition was quite good and the plates, for the most part, were still in excellent condition. Picart impressions are, of course, much cheaper.
