Godefroy-Maurice de la Tour d’Auvergne, Duc de Bouillon
Engraving, 1657, Robert-Dumesnil 50, Petitjean & Wickert 31 iii/vii, 384 x 293 mm., ex collections : Chevalier J. Camberlyn (Lugt 514) ; A. Hubert (L. 130). Perhaps nothing shows the aesthetic range of the seventeenth century so clearly as the contrast between the free and brilliant etched portraits of Rembrandt and the tightly controlled but equally brilliant engraved portraits of Nanteuil. Only one year separates Rembrandt’s Coppenol from this superb portrait by Nanteuil, and while the psychological penetration is clear in both, the means to that end could not be more different. A brilliant impression on laid paper with narrow margins, in fine condition and with a distinguished provenance.
