Italian Landscape with an Aqueduct
Original drawing in brown wash over graphite , 225 x 380 mm. Though a Dutchman, and burgomaster of the town of Gorkum for almost twenty years, van der Ulft’s virtually exclusive artistic dedication was to the Italian landscape – in paintings, drawings and etchings. He probably traveled a good deal in Italy although details are lacking. His drawing style, though somewhat resembling that of Jan de Bisschop, is almost unmistakable, and he is one of the rare artists who extensively used the combination of graphite and brown wash with no pen work. A lovely and evocative drawing on laid paper, laid down to an old mount and with an old, and totally wrong, attribution to Claude Lorrain verso, newly matted.
