Saint Pepin and Sainte Begga
Etching and engraving, Wurzbach 33 (Steen), Dutuit 42 (after Rubens), 333 x 262 mm. The print is after a drawing by Rubens which, in turn, is based on two paintings by Hubert van Eyck. A fine impression on fairly thick laid paper with large margins; some irregular central horizontal crease marks, probably from drying. Although, for most purposes, the image is simply a charming study of a couple in medieval dress, the individuals are actually true historical personages. Pepin was mayor of the palace of Landen and Duke of Brabant under the Frankish King Dagobert in the seventh century. Not officially recognized as a saint, he was a known defender of the Church. St. Begga was his daughter and her marriage with the son of St. Arnulf of Metz produced a son, Pepin, who became the founder of the Carolingian dynasty in France. They are both, therefore, ancestors of Charlemagne.
