The Venetian Ball
Engraving, Hollstein 13 only state, Wurzbach 13, 166 x 167 mm., ex collection: E. Stuyck (not in Lugt). A fine impression of this circular engraving on laid paper with the full square platemark and narrow margins beyond. The work is adapted, in reverse, from the large engraving by Hendrik Goltzius after Dirk Barentsz and de Bry has added curved panels of text above and below the subject in turning it into a circular composition. While the scene is clearly that of a Venetian palace, the actual subject is open to question. Antenor, a Trojan, was the legendary founder of Venice, but his name may be used here allegorically to represent Henry III of France who visited Venice in 1574 and was lavishly feted. Alternatively, it has been suggested that the subject is the wedding of Titian's daughter Lavinia in 1555, with the bearded figure (here at the right) Titian himself and the man behind him Barendsz. Whichever is the case, musicians appear at the windows to the right and a Commedia dell' Arte troupe at the left. Goltzius' original engraving is an exceptionally large rectangle. De Bry's miniaturization of it shows considerable skill.
