Three Genii

Etching, 1610, from Das Neue Grottesken Buch, Andresen IV-259-47, 128 x 171 mm. Fine, strong impression on laid paper with a barely visible watermark, trimmed to the subject, in places just within. The three genii are each involved with a fantastic plot. The first has his foot in a basket full of eggs and has grabbed two of them; a bird pecks at his head. The second stands by a turtle which has a grotesque mask resting on its shell which evolves into a plant. The third stands with a basket on his head from which grows a plant and also supports a two-headed bird eating a fish. The whole is set in a flat plain with shrubbery. Jamnitzer worked in Augsburg – if that is any explanation.
