Dimanche aux Fortifs (Sunday at the Fortifications)

Woodcut in colors, 1898, Texier-Bernier 506, 270 x 336 mm. Fine impression on wove paper with good margins; small spots of foxing in the margins and a repaired edge tear at the bottom just entering the image. The block is reduced and fully cut, the woman at the left is now different and facing right and the image is printed in six colors (T-B mentions four only) with overprintings and stop-outs, but it is not yet the completed state and has the appearance of a working proof. A pencil note on the impression says (translated), intermediary state between the first and the last -- which explains something but not much. The final state was apparently published in an edition of 35.
