Petite Fille à la Poupée (Little Girl with a Doll)

Drypoint, before 1888, Béraldi 40, Knyff N.D., Musée de Pontoise 100 i/ii (?). Fine impression in bistre with burr and plate tone on thin japan with good margins, signed in pencil and with the artist's red monogram stamp. Although clearly catalogued by Béraldi (and therefore before 1888) the print was inexplicably missed by Knyff. To further confuse matters, it is illustrated in the Musée de Pontoise catalog but said to be Portrait d'Enfant Assis (99) instead of this plate (100), although the doll is clearly visible in the illustration. Pontoise further posits a second state with aquatint which, if true, makes this impression the first state. Though Goeneutte’s graphic output was uneven and he was perhaps more successful as a painter, the best of his drypoints and lithographs deserve more attention than they have gotten thus far.
