Buhot, Un Débarquement

Un Débarquement en Angleterre (A Disembarking in England)

Etching, drypoint, roulette, aquatint and spirit ground, 1879, B/G 130 iii-iv/v, 318 x 238 mm., ex collection: H.B. (Henrietta Buhot). Fine impression of a previously undescribed working state, presumably between the third and fourth, on laid paper with full margins and signed with the red owl stamp; damages to the sheet including pieces missing from the left margin, tears and thin spots in the left image, all repaired and the print backed with thin japan. In regard to the placing of this impression among the known states, the final title and signature are etched in the lower margin and the gulls have appeared in the sky. There are, however, no other work in the bottom margin and no division lines between the sketches in the left margin and the sketches at the top left remain unfinished. In addition, there is comparatively little aquatint in the main subject and the line work is far more evident. The location is probably the pier at Ramsgate. It is interesting to compare this print with the preceding one. Lepère’s is all sunshine and light, Buhot’s all rain, wind and darkness. The opposing sides of the coin.
