Matinée d’Hiver au Quai de l’Hôtel-Dieu (Winter Afternoon on the Quay of the Charity Hospital)

Etching and drypoint, 1876, B/G 123 v/xv, 239 x 320 mm. A fine impression on chine-appliqué with good margins of the state with the added “chimneys.” The different tone of the paper here (rather than any change in the plate or the inking) lends a certain brightness to the impression which is perhaps contrary to the nature of the scene but has its own attraction. The number 19, which is usually described as being in the far upper right corner of the plate, is not present in either of these impression as the plate has been wiped clean of ink at the top edge. A bare trace of it remains in this impression. The Quai de l’Hôtel-Dieu was never officially named that; it is actually the Quai aux Fleurs on the Île de la Cité.
