Le Petit Chasseur (The Little Huntsman)

Lithograph, ca. 1890, B/G 181 i/ii, 240 x 360 mm. A fine impression of the very rare first state, printed in black (the second state was printed in grey-green) on japan tissue with good margins, laid down to strong laid paper, signed in pencil and annotated “1er Etat” and with an almost illegible inscription containing the title. Obviously, the image is taken from the preceding print, here on a much larger scale, and with the beginnings of marginal images commenting on the main subject. In contrast to the smaller print, the lithograph presents the appearance of a crayon drawing, far less concerned with subtle gradations of tone and far more with the drama of sunrise and the play of light on the scene. In over 40 years of collecting and dealing in Buhot prints, this is only the third impression of this state I have come across in catalogues or in person.
