Un Vieux Chantier à Rochester (An Old Shipyard at Rochester)

Etching, drypoint, aquatint and roulette, 1879, B/G 147 ii/iii, 118 x 282 mm. Fine, very dark impression with heavy plate tone on brown, oatmeal wove paper with large margins. Bourcard says the plate was canceled after twenty impressions, and impressions from the clearly canceled plate (iii/iii) are known. There is an etched inscription in the plate, but the impression here is too heavily loaded with tone to be able to read it. Rochester is on the Medway in southeastern England. The river, together with a forest of masts and several windmills can be seen in the background of this print, which is dominated by the huge winch at the right, though the eye is directed toward the single human inhabitant of the deserted yard.
