Fête Nationale au Boulevard de Clichy (National Holiday on the Boulevard de Clichy)

Etching, drypoint, aquatint, sandpaper soft ground and foul biting, 1878, B/G 127 vii/viii, 317 x 235 mm. Superb, rich impression of the completed state before cancellation, on Hallines laid paper with full margins and signed with the red owl stamp; small repaired tear in the margin. The festival took place, as the etched inscription notes, on June 30, not July 14, because Bastille Day had not yet been established as the national holiday. Buhot’s marges symphoniques here add considerably to the varied display of celebration, essentially extending our view around the corners and beyond the trees. For unknown reasons, impressions of the completed state appear to be far scarcer than those of several of the intermediate states.
