Farm Scene at Hatford

Pen and black ink and watercolor, 1922, 219 x 290 mm. Fine, finished watercolor on textured paper laid down on card, signed, dated and inscribed in ink. Hatford is a small village in Oxfordshire (it was formerly in Berkshire) with associated farms and a history of habitation going back to the Bronze Age. Though McBey is principally known as one of the most eminent, if conservative, etchers of his time, he was also a highly skilled and prolific painter of watercolors with a quite astonishing fluency in setting down the precise spatial and coloristic relationships he wanted to convey. His style is distinctive and immediately recognizable and the color adds a solidity that is not always present in his etchings.
