Etching and drypoint, 1859, 150 x 223 mm., from Sixteen Etchings of the Thames, Kennedy 44 ii/iii, Wedmore 42 i/ii. Superb impression before rework on old laid paper with large, full margins, notated W. 42, 1st state and SIGNED in pencil with the butterfly just below the platemark. While the image is familiar, the whole appearance of the plate is different from what is usually seen. The plate is almost clean wiped, leaving only a light, even plate tone, and every tiny detail of line is crystal clear. Impressions of this print before the final state are uncommon, and those that have been pencil signed by Whistler are exceedingly rare. The print is in wonderfully fresh condition
