Madonna and Child in the Clouds
Etching and engraving, ca. 1541, Bartsch 2, Reed & Wallace 43, 153 x 106 mm.
This is one of only four prints by the great Sienese master, the artistic importance and influence of which is all out of proportion to their number. Exceptionally fine, early impression, apparently slightly earlier and better than the MFA impression illustrated in Reed & Wallace, on laid paper without apparent watermark, trimmed on the platemark or borderline but complete; a brown dot on the Virgin's head and a brown ink number on the reverse slightly showing through to the recto at the right of the figures, several printer's creases virtually invisible from the front. A rare print and especially so in such a fine impression.
