Gideon's Battle with the Midianites
Etching and engraving, 303 x 415 mm. Fine impression of this dramatic, if extremely obscure, night print, on laid paper trimmed to the subject or borderline, the text below somewhat trimmed and the engraved signature rescued from the lost portion and glued to the plate margin; a vertical center fold flattened and reinfored. Judges 7 tells the story: "Gideon then divided his three hundred men into three groups. To each he gave a horn and an empty pitcher, with a torch inside each pitcher. The three groups blew their horns and smashed their pitchers; with their left hands they grasped the torches, with their right hands the horns for blowing...; and they shouted, 'The sword for Jehovah and for Gideon.'... The whole camp was thrown into confusion and the Midianites fled, shouting... Jehovah made each one turn his sword against his comrade throughout the entire camp." Somehow, the print manages to take in virtually all of this.
