St. John the Baptist Preaching in the Desert
Engraving, Hollstein 116 ii/ii, Wurzbach 92, LeBlanc 94, 394 x 540 mm., ex collection: G. A. Cardew (Lugt 1134). Fine impression of this large print, trimmed along the borderline which is fully visible on three sides and partially so at the top, and with the text at the bottom; printer's crease, flattened centerfold and a repaired tear. All four of the Gospels relate the story of the preaching of St. John. "John the Baptist was in the desert, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. All Judaea and all the people of Jerusalem made their way to him." (Mark I). In this complex and detailed composition, it is particularly fascinating how the artist has mixed figures in Eastern dress with those in medieval or renaissance European costume.
