The Prophet Ahijah Tearing His Cloak into Twelve Pieces and Giving Ten of Them to Jeraboam
Engraving, 1604, Bartsch 20 i/iii, Hollstein 12 i/iii, 268 x 195 mm. Fine, silvery impression on laid paper trimmed outside the borderline and with the text below; small surface abrasions at the top edge. I Kings 11 tells of the sins of Solomon's old age, the punishment to be visited on his son, and the prophecy of Ahijah to Jeraboam. "And it came to pass at that time when Jeraboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field. And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it into twelve pieces: And he said to Jeraboam, 'Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Behold I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee.'"
