Sister Marie-Jeanne-des-Anges, Ursuline Nun
Engraving, 1665, Nagler Monogrammisten 1387, 73 x 53 mm., ex collection: Pierre Mariette, 1665 (Lugt 1788-90). This exquisitely tiny portrait of an Ursuline nun came into the collection of the great collector Pierre Mariette the very year it was printed and the year of its subject's death. Jeanne-des-Anges was a charismatic religious figure and one of the first women in France to have published an autobiography. The fact that she had been one of the famous nuns of Loudon possessed in the 1630s by demons and then exorcized did not hurt the public desire to know her story. But she preferred to emphasize her own spiritual life and growth in her writings and at her death she was a venerated figure, well known to many of the leaders of Europe as well as to the general public. The portrait here is sympathetic and the attendant angel points upward to the light.
