The Virgin and Child Appearing to St. Philippe de Nery

Chiaroscuro woodcut over etching, 384 x 253 mm. Fine impression in shades of grey-green with black etched outline on laid paper with large margins. St. Philip Neri (1515-1595) was called "the apostle of the city of Rome." He founded the Congregation of the Oratory and was responsible for the building of the Chiesa Nuova. Philip was known for his love of God and man, spiritual integrity, a sense of proportion, gentleness and gaiety, the last not a common attribute of saints. In this picture, he is smiling.
