The Patron Saints of Austria
Woodcut, 1515, Bartsch 116, Strauss 174, Meder 219 ii/ii b (of f), 155 x 359 mm. Fine, clear impression lacking the titles and added text but the image complete and with the borderline all around. Originally the block contained only six saints. The two at the right, Saints Otto and Poppo were added, probably in 1517, when Poppo's grave was opened during the visit of the Emperor Maximilian to Trier. It is a mark of the flexibility of woodcut technique that an additional block could be cut and fastened to the original and the whole printed as one. The two additional saints are not by Dürer but probably by his student Hans Springinklee. The six original figures, by Dürer, are, from the left, Quirinus, Maximilian, Florian, Severinus, Coloman and Leopold.
