Thomas Touching the Wound of the Risen Christ
Original drawing in pen and brown ink on laid paper, 238 x 171 mm., signed or inscribed in pencil with the artist's name, ex collections Carlo Prayer (Lugt 2044) and Bernasconi, 1977. The scene is from John 20.27: "Then he spoke to Thomas, 'Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into my side. Do not be unbelieving any more but believe.' Thomas replied, 'My Lord and my God!' Jesus said to him: "You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.'" Camuccini studied with Popeo Batoni. Immensely successful as an artist, he painted a coronation for Napoleon, ca 1810, and was highly thought of by David. He was a member of the Academy of San Luca and was made a baron in 1820 by Pope Pius VIII.
