The Death of the Virgin
Engraving, before 1481, Bartsch 17, Lehrs L.5.100,VI, The Illustrated Bartsch (Commentary) 5, 254 x 168 mm., ex collection: unknown early collector (ornamented flower), not in Lugt. A fine impression of this rare print (Lehrs knew of 25 impressions, many of them defective), complete and showing the borderline all around, at least comparable to the BM impression reproduced in The Illustrated Bartsch; the paper lightly toned, an expert restoration along part of the top edge, a short tear at the bottom. The work is a contemporary copy of Schongauer's print in the same direction and Master AG is believed to have worked in the atelier of Schongauer's father. The death, or "dormition"of the Virgin (according to some legends she was not dead but only sleeping for three days until her resurrection) does not, of course, appear in scripture, but in early apocryphal writings from the fourth century on. The Golden Legend, written in the thirteenth century, relates how the Apostles, scattered throughout the world, were picked up by clouds and delivered to her bedside. All twelve are pictured here, one placing a lighted candle in the Virgin's hand.
