Jubal and His Musical Instruments
Engraving, 1583, from The History of the First Men, Hollstein 27 i/ii, 194 x 247 mm. Genesis 4 tells of the children of Adam and Eve and their descendents: "And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron." This passage marks the first mention of music in the Bible and the first -- and last -- mention of Jubal and Tubal-cain. Fine impression on laid paper, trimmed just outside the borderline and text; a tiny loss at the right edge.
