Etching, 1939, 176 x 227 mm., Winkler sale catalog 27. Upon his return to the San Francisco area, Winkler returned to his traditional subject matter but with far less interest in pure line and a new concern for gradations of shading. Less idiosyncratic, less individual, these later plates seem less an advance on the earlier ones than a simple change of style. One would not want to overpraise them, but some of the images are quite beautiful on their own terms. Fine impression on wove paper with full margins, signed in pencil.
