Cameron: The Gateway of Bruges

The Gateway of Bruges

Etching and drypoint, 1907, 323 x 188 mm., Rinder 387 iii/iii. The first print of the Belgian Set (R. 387-396). There were 53 complete sets and a few separate impressions of some subjects. Whistler's Beggars, Venice was clearly an inspiration here, but Cameron is more concerned with perspective and solidity, perhaps with reason, Bruges vis-à-vis Venice. A fine impression on thin, laid japan paper with narrow margins, signed in pencil.
