Nothnagel: Peasant with Pipe

Peasant with Pipe and Beer Stein

Etching, 1772, 112 x 90 mm., Nagler KL 21. He could be the trans-national descendent of one of Ostade's smokers, but the expression on his face tells us that the world was perhaps a more difficult place than it had been in the Dutch artist's time. A fine impression on laid paper with narrow margins, tipped down to a sheet of wove paper and an illegible pencil inscription in the lower margin.
