The Peasant and His Wife, Drinking

Etching, 1773, 52 x 47 mm., Nagler KL 23. Nothnagel is an artist not so much undervalued as undiscovered, a member of that studiously avoided group: German etchers of the 18th century. Many of them, including Nothnagel, derive their style from Rembrandt, van Ostade and other Dutch 17th century etchers. As such, they, and he, represent the end of a tradition rather than anything new. But for sheer delight on a small scale, Nothnagel's etchings are a gift to the market, offering quite a different view of the 18th century from the French, the Italian or the British. A fine impression on laid paper with small margins.
